AP Chemistry Summer Assignment
Dear future AP Chemistry student,
Hello! I’m Ms. Cordeiro, but folks usually call me “Ms. C.” I am very excited and pleased to know that you are going to be in my AP class in August! This is a challenging class, but can be very rewarding if you put in the effort. You can understand how matter works and why things happen the way they happen. You can understand how to predict both the properties of unknown substances and the outcome of chemical processes. You can unlock secrets to the mysteries of the world. Okay, maybe not all the mysteries. But you CAN learn how to argue not cleaning your room using the laws of thermodynamics! Or learn the ancient art of alchemy! :) Bottom line we’re going to work hard. We’re going to want to give up sometimes. I will push you not to do that. I will support you in every way that I can and do my best to offer up exciting and engaging lessons. At the end of April, we may feel like crying a little. That’s okay! We’ll do it together. But, after the AP exam is over, and you’ve spent your time and energy giving it all you have, the feeling of satisfaction of trying something difficult and not perishing in the process will overcome you. To make sure you have everything you need for the year, please go ahead and purchase the items on the supply list. The two review books are only a max of $20 all together if you get them on Amazon. I will be assigning items from these books, so you really need to have them. One is for all year, and the other is a short crash course for second semester.In total, you shouldn’t spend more than $30 on this stuff. Supply List 1. Scientific or graphing calculator 4. 1 gallon of distilled or purified water (any brand is fine – not spring water) 5. Lab shoes (closed toe, old tennis shoes are good) 6. Hair ties (anyone with long hair) 7. Notes notebook this can be an online notebook (try Evernote) or a paper notebook; you will be allowed to take notes on electronic devices if that helps keep you more organized. 8. Lab notebook this can be the same as last year's notebook and we can add to it; or you can start over 9. Thin Expo markers (at least a 3 pack) Here is the actual summer assignment: There are two parts described below. You will have a test over these materials in the first week of school. Check the website later in the summer for the official test date. #1. You will be completing the first part of your summer assignment through the National Math and Science Initiative site: http://bit.ly/yCoMew. On this site, please scroll down to the section titled All Things Stoichiometry. You will take notes and complete the problems for: A. 01 Chemical Foundations B. 02 Atoms, Molecules, Ions C. 03 Stoichiometry D. STOICHIOMETRY WORKSHEET (only do 1982 FRQ, parts ad) You will see several videos accompanying each worksheet. Please view these, as needed, to review the material. Many of them have the answers provided to check yourself, but you will be tested over this material, and copying down an answer will not help you. Your notes are up to you. You can print and highlight, take notes, or just do the problems. This is your time to decide what works best for you in this class. Figure it out now.
#2 The second part of your assignment involves memorizing information you will use all year: the polyatomic ions. There will be a section of the first test devoted to your memorization of these guys. We will also quiz over them often throughout the year.
