He was born in Bicknell, Indiana on January 6, 1935 to Herman West Sr. and Susan (Perry) West. He graduated from Bicknell High School. Herman went straight from High School into the Army and served for three years. He was attached to the Army Corp. of Engineers building air bases on Guam.
