Curriculum
Legacy Online Academy brings the fundamentals of what works through in-person learning to an online experience. We take the core values from Legacy Traditional Schools — accelerated pace of study, high expectations for academics and behavior, and a well-rounded approach to education.
Math
Legacy Online Academy’s math curriculum utilizes problem-based learning to help deepen students’ abilities to reason. In an all-online classroom, differentiated instruction, tiered activities, learning centers and flexible grouping options help to personalize and adapt instruction to meet the needs of all students.
English Language Arts
From phonemic awareness all the way up to comprehension strategies and skills, students in grades K-5 explore various types of storytelling and writing within multiple genres. Students in grades 6-8 build a solid literacy foundation that is necessary for success in college and careers. Exposure to rich literature selections with increasing text complexity across genres builds students’ literacy and cultural knowledge so they become comfortable reading different text structures and understand the elements that appear in the selections.
Science
Students will construct an understanding of scientific concepts through investigation and analysis, the use of virtual labs, student readings, and interactive technology. Students exercise logical thinking and decision-making skills appropriate to their grade level. In addition, the science curricula develops scientific inquiry through student readings, interactive notebooking, student projects, and the use of mathematics to quantify, synthesize and communicate results of investigations, hypotheses and experiments.
Social Studies
From early exploration through modern times, students will expand their study of world history, U.S. history, Arizona history, and geography, and the economy with an embedded emphasis on being a responsible citizen.
In addition to core content courses, Legacy Online Academy will offer a diverse selection of course offerings to provide students with a well-rounded education – such as music, the arts, social studies, environmental education, computer science and civics. Special/Elective offerings will depend on grade level and interest, and may include but are not limited to the following subjects:

How We Test
State Assessments
Legacy Online Academy students in the appropriate grade levels will participate in the AzM2 or similar assessment each year according to the Arizona state statutes. This data will give Legacy Online Academy an overview of how the curriculum is working for the students. Tests will be administered and proctored as prescribed by the Arizona Department of Education.
Arizona Department of Education requires that all standardized state testing be conducted in person. LOA students will complete state testing at a local LTS campus that is within 25 miles of their residence. If there is not a campus within 25 miles of a student’s residence, an alternative testing location may be identified. It’s important to note, based on Arizona law, that students who fail to comply with the testing requirements may not be allowed to participate in Arizona
online instruction.
District Assessments
Benchmark testing plays a significant role in determining student achievement. Three times a year students will participate in the NWEA MAP Growth or similar assessment. This assessment will inform teachers on current student performance and what skills the students are ready to learn. These benchmark assessments are research-based and provide nationally-normed data to allow for Legacy Online Academy to see where students sit among their peers across the country as well as the state.
