Steady yourselves, Black Clover fans. Season five of the hit anime series is unlikely to land before the close of 2024, despite previous suggestions that it might.
In fact, a follow-up season technically still isn't even on the table given that the show has yet to be greenlit by Studio Pierrot, who produced the first four seasons of Black Clover.
The show has been on hiatus ever since its fourth season aired early in 2021.
The main reason for the break was that the show's plot had fully caught up with the source material, but since then, the Black Clover manga has continued – which means there are now plenty of stories ready to get the screen-adaptation treatment.
Given the show's success and the Netflix release of its spin-off movie, we'd be surprised if a season five announcement doesn't eventually come – but when?
Until then, though, let's dig into what a potential Black Clover season five might bring.
Black Clover season 5 potential release date: When will Black Clover season 5 air?
Given that no official renewal announcement has come, Black Clover season five currently has no release date.
Rumours were previously flying that a 2024 release date was being considered, were never verified and were met with continued radio silence from Studio Pierrot.
However, the release of last year's spin-off movie Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King has sustained fans' appetite for the franchise.
The continuation of the story on screen and on page (given that the manga dropped new chapters in August 2024) could mean that the creators are not done expanding Asta's world. So we won't give up hope just yet, and neither should you.
The long wait might come as a blow to new fans of the show, given that Netflix in the UK and US recently added the entirety of season one to its library.
The first 51 episodes (yep) cover six arcs of the original manga, which means there's a hell of a lot of story left to tell if you're just discovering the franchise. Black Clover seasons two, three and four are available to watch on Crunchyroll.
Black Clover season 5 voice actors: Who's in Black Clover season 5?
While we wait for confirmation of Black Clover season five, we can assume much of the show's main cast will return, including:

- Noelle Silva – Kana Yūki (JP) / Jill Harris (EN)

Black Clover season 5 plot: What will happen in Black Clover season 5?
Black Clover season 4 spoilers follow.
Black Clover season four's final episodes took us to chapter 272 of Yūki Tabata's original manga.
Another 97 chapters have been released in the three years since, and we'd expect these to make up the bulk of a potential Black Clover season five. The show has previously adapted about two chapters per episode.
Without spoiling too much of what happens, it looks like we'll be picking up right at the climax of the Spade Kingdom arc, with a final showdown against the Dark Triad imminent.
This means fans will get to know the Zogratis siblings very well, with new actors expected to join the cast to voice Lucius, Dante, Vanica and Zenon. The Zogratis family's deal with Upper-Class Devils is what led to their rise in power, enough for them to usurp the Spade Kingdom from its original royal family – but we're about to see that power be challenged in the upcoming Black Clover season.
The Dark Triad's arrival also brings that of their subordinates, the Dark Disciples, all of whom are also imbued with the Upper-Class Devils' power, but that's as far as we're willing to go for now. The rest will unfold in season five.
Black Clover season four ended with Asta rejecting the underworld's rules and deciding to work alongside Liebe.
We also saw Noelle and the rest of the Black Bulls training to become stronger, while the Magic Knights and the Wizard King prepared for the upcoming war with the Spade Kingdom.
Black Clover season 5 trailer: Any Black Clover season 5 footage yet?
As Black Clover season five hasn't been officially announced yet, no trailers are available.
Fans of the show hungry for more of the franchise's epic fight scenes can glimpse what Studio Pierrot's current productions might look like in Netflix's spin-off movie Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King.
Although Sword of the Wizard King is based on an original story, not Yūki Tabata's manga, it features plenty of callbacks to earlier events.
Sword of the Wizard King is set after season four and sees Asta and his mage company battle against banished wizards who seek to destroy the Clover Kingdom and claim the power for themselves. The spin-off also sees the return of Yuno, who fights by Asta's side, but do they have what it takes to defend the kingdom?
It has already been confirmed by Netflix that it is not officially canon, and so the events that transpire in the spin-off movie will not continue in subsequent seasons of the show. But it's definitely a fun way to keep momentum going in between seasons.
Black Clover seasons 1-4 are available on Crunchyroll, while Black Clover season 1 and the spin-off movie Sword of the Wizard King are available on Netflix.
